How the tip is worked out
The calculator starts from common guidance and adds only what the job asked for. Nothing is hidden: open “Edit the guidance numbers” and every figure below can be changed.
| Guidance | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Local hourly move, per mover per hour | $4 | $5 |
| Long distance, share of the final bill | 5% | 10% |
| Half day cross-check, per mover | $20 | $40 |
| Full day cross-check, per mover | $40 | $80 |
| Each flight of stairs, per mover | $2 | $4 |
| Long carry, per mover | $5 | $10 |
| Piano, safe or gun safe, per mover per item | $10 | $20 |
| Heat or rain, per mover | $5 | $10 |
This is common guidance, not a rule. Great service multiplies the total by 1.2, poor service by 0.5. Amounts are rounded to whole dollars, and the crew total is always the per-mover figure times the number of movers.
A worked example
Four movers, five hours, two flights of stairs and a crew that did great work. At $4 to $5 per mover per hour that is $20 to $25 each before extras. The stairs add $4 to $8 per mover, and the great-service multiplier lifts the total. The calculator gives $29 to $40 per mover and $116 to $160 for the crew. Without the stairs and the service bump the same day is $20 to $25 per mover.

When not to tip
- The company charges a service fee that it says covers gratuity. Ask before the day, then you are not paying twice.
- Property was damaged, things were missing or the crew ignored your instructions. Tip less or nothing, and raise the problem with the company in writing.
- You are paying a very tight budget. A sincere thank-you, a cold drink and a good review help more than money you do not have.
Tipping is optional. The calculator is for people who want to tip and do not want to guess.
Drinks, snacks and lunch
Cold water in summer and hot coffee in winter are welcome and cost little. On a long day, ordering pizza or sandwiches for the crew is a kind extra. It does not replace a cash tip; treat it as a separate courtesy.
Cash and envelopes
Most crews prefer cash handed to each person at the end of the job. The calculator shows the fewest bills for each mover and the total to withdraw. The PDF prints cut-out envelopes so each person gets their own. Hand the envelopes to the crew, not to the lead, so nobody has to ask for a share.

Questions
How much should I tip movers?
Common guidance is $4 to $5 per mover per hour on a local move, or 5% to 10% of the bill split among the crew on a long-distance move. Use the calculator to add stairs, heavy items, weather and service.
Do I tip each mover or the company?
Tip each mover directly, in cash if you can. The money should reach the people who lifted your things, so hand each person an envelope instead of giving one amount to the lead.
Should I tip before or after the move?
After the job is finished and you have checked that your belongings arrived. A tip at the start sets no expectation; a tip at the end rewards what happened.
Are these amounts a rule?
No. They are common guidance. Tipping is optional, and every rate in the calculator can be changed to match what you think is fair.
Is it free?
Yes. Every calculator works on screen without an account, and the share link and a basic printout are free. The Move Planner ($4.99, one time) adds the full budget workbook, packing checklist, named tip envelopes and a room-by-room inventory.
Does it store what I type?
No. The numbers stay in your browser. The site records anonymous usage events, such as which calculator was used, but not your hours, bill, addresses or names.
